About the Fight Team

Our fight team is a group of boxers divided into a youth team and an adult team, both groups have males and females. Our youth program has produced phenomenal boxers that have eyes on the Canadian Winter Games, National Championships, and more as we go into the 2024-2025 season. We also have a bad-ass group of adults who rep our club at competitions across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and the rest of Canada.

What can I expect from joining the Fight Team?

Our fight team is dedicated to the craft, and often commit 10-20 hours per week into their boxing. Group Training takes place 3 times per week (Tue,Wed,Thu), with optional sessions on Mondays and weekends. 

The more you put into training, the faster you will gain skills needed to advance to the next level. You can come 6 times a week and be fighting within 8 weeks. On the other hand, some others take up to 10 or 12 months of training to get their first fight if they aren't focused on growth.  The MINIMUM amount you should be training is 10 hours per week while you are on the fight team. 

You put effort in, and get results out. This is the #1 factor that determines your success. The best boxers in the world simply have put in hours upon hours into the sport, and the reps pay off in the ring.

Coach Austin is dedicated to your success, and he's willing to get you whatever you need to make your boxing career a success. We can point you to the best physiotherapists, mental health therapists, strength and conditioning experts, and even a nutritionist. 

Where are my fights?

In our 2024-2025 season, we plan on fighting across Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Canada. You will likely fight in 3-4 of these cities. For trips that require flying, we will usually pay for your flights, or try to find you a sponsor to help out with trip fees. 

We travel everywhere from North Battleford & Edmonton, to Vancouver, the USA, and even internationally.

All fights that we will be attending are on the FIGHT SCHEDULE PAGE. If you are not available for any of the dates listed, please let Austin know right away.  Confirmed fights for those bouts will be posted there. 

Anything I should do before going into the fight team?

You don't need to know much when you join boxing. Know your Lefts and Rights, learn to listen and practice at the same time, and don't hit the bag or practice pads before you come to our gym. Our coaches will be MUCH more impressed if you start running or skipping before you join the club. 

Punching the bag without being shown how, is a recipe for long term bad habits. For every bad punch you throw, it takes 3 good punches just to get back to square one (think one big step back, 3 small steps forward).

Focus on cardio and conditioning! Our coaches will handle the rest.

Equipment & Dress Code

Boxing is a sport that can be super cheap, or super expensive. You MUST have clean indoor shoes, and a waterbottle. 

All other equipment is available at the club for free use. If you do want your own equipment, we suggest ordering online or visiting the Clinch Fight Shop in Edmonton. ​Currently, we do not suggest any stores in Lloydminster EXCEPT for mouthguards, which you can buy at any sports store. We recommend shock doctor. 

Dress Code: Dress appropriately. Shorts must cover entire buttocks. Crop tops must not rise above ribcage, and although tank tops are allowed, open-side tank tops (that expose nipples) are not. Jewelry not permitted in the club. 

PATHWAY TO YOUR FIGHT

Step 1 (1-2 months) Learning

Your first 2 months will likely be learning the basics of footwork, defense, and offensive maneuvers. This stage of learning includes shadowboxing, drilling, and heavybag & padwork. In this stage, we suggest coming on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and the occasional Wednesday Advanced Class. 

 

Step 2 (1-2 months) Applying

Your next 2 months will be spent going into more tactical boxing to suit and develop your personal style. Lots of personal padwork and applied drills will be incorporated into training. Take these drill seriously. Here is where we recommend coming to majority of the Wednesday classes, as well as the occasional overtime class (mondays). Booking a free pre fight one on one training session will also help our coaches give you 100% personalized pointers to get you better at the sport. Sparring begins in this phase. 

Before you are allowed to compete or spar, you must have a medical completed. These can be done by your family doctor, or a walk-in clinic. Border City Clinic currently does these for $60. Some doctors will charge more, some doctors have given them to patients for free as a part of their annual checkup. 

Step 3 Mock Match

A mock match is a 3 round sparring match meant to simulate a fight. There will be eyes on you, and you will be pushed harder by your sparring partner than ever before. With power still only at 40-50%, intensity goes up to 100%. We will have coaches for both boxers that will give advice to the competitors between rounds. Your performance during this mock match will determine if you are ready to compete, or if more training is required.

 

Step 4 Matchmaking (2-10 weeks)

Once coach thinks you're ready to fight, your name will be entered into all competitions suited to you on our fight schedule.  Matchmaking is done through Coach Austin and he will be your primary contact, as well as other coaches contact for when you have a match. No communication between parents or boxers and other club's coaches regarding matchmaking without prior notification. 

While we are matchmaking, you should be attending an AVERAGE of 3 classes a week, and you should be doing ancillary work such as strength & conditioning, roadwork, or open gyms. 

We are going to pick your opponent based on 3 things:

  1. Weight

    • For most competitions, all competitors must be within 3kg of eachother​

    • In tournaments, we follow weight classes

  2. Age​

    • Age Groups are based on birth year. Ages 11-16 must be within 24 months of eachother​, adults have the elite age group (ages 19-40). Masters are aged 40+ and must be within a 10 year range,

  3. Experience​​​

    • We divide experience groups into sub-novice (0-3 bouts), novice (0-10 bouts), and open (10+ bouts).​

    • Coaches will only take a fight if they believe you have great potential to win if you box well, but potential to lose if you box badly. 

Step 5 Fighting 

Once your fight date is set, you start to watch your weight a bit closer, you're eating a bit cleaner, and you are mentally preparing yourself for fight day by not only visualizing the end result (a win), but also the process you take to the win. We go more into this in the mentality portion of this page. You will want to book private training sessions with either Coach Austin or Coach Devon to polish the cracks in your game. This is where you need to really start to believe "Train Hard, Fight Easy". With the week before the fight being a "taper" week where you focus on mental preparedness and letting your muscles recover from your training, you
